London's Historic Music Landmarks Under Threat
January 2015
Help stop the gentrification of London. Sign the petition to help save historic Denmark Street, aka Tin Pan Alley, the mecca for British musicians of the 50s, 60s and beyond. Also in trouble is the Ealing Club, where British Blues first flourished in 1962. Have you say on the area's redevelopment plans. The Soho area of London is also under threat, as is the Starlite Club in Sudbury, Middx.

Blue Plaque event at Ealing Club
March 2012
Months of campaigning and fundraising by British Blues enthusiasts finally paid off when a Blue Plaque to commemorate the beginnings of British Rhythm and Blues was unveiled in Ealing, West London, on Saturday 17th March 2012 by Alexis Korner's widow Bobbie. The club was London's first regular R&B venue and was opened by Cyril Davies and Alexis Korner in 1962. It was notable for being the place where the Rolling Stones first came together, and regular musicians who played there included The Who, Eric Clapton and Rod Stewart. Carlo was there in 1962/63 with the Cyril Davies All Stars and, in the interval, The Rolling Stones who were then without a permanent drummer. Carlo's family accepted an invitation to the plaque unveiling ceremony on his behalf, and his widow Iris chatted fondly to fellow-guest Charlie Watts about his time with Carlo on the 60s club scene. Other VIP guests included musician Tom Robinson and BBC presenter 'Whispering' Bob Harris. Read more on the Ealing Club site or read a blog about the event here.
Carlo is inspiration for new audio book
2011
Johnny Remember Me was originally commissioned by Brighton's literary loogster Jay Clifton, in which authors were requested to pick a movie and spin off a character or situation from the film into an original short story. Based on Edmond T Gréville's Beat Girl author Cathi Unsworth takes inspiration from Carlo's early career and transforms him into fictional drummer Fredo Long, set around a swinging beat cellar club in 50's Soho London and Berwick Street. Famous London rock venue burns down
February 2000
The famous Railway Hotel in Harrow, NW London, was destroyed by fire on Sunday, 28 Feb 2000 by vandals. The venue was a key landmark in rock history, having played host to many British rock and blues bands of the 1960s - it was known that The Who played their first gig there and Pete Townshend had made a hole in the ceiling with his guitar antics. Carlo Little played there with Screaming Lord Sutch & The Savages and Cyril Davies R&B All Stars.
Carlo mentioned on The Tonight Show
August 1999
Carlo Little was informed in August 1999 that he was mentioned in Jay Leno's monologue in the 'Tonight Show'. Fortunately, the show is broadcast on European satellite channel CNBC, and he got to see the clip. Here's the extract from the show:
"Boy, here's a sad story. A man by the name of Carlo Little quit the Rolling Stones 36 years ago, quit the band. He is now selling hot dogs at the same stadium the Rolling Stones are performing at this weekend, Wembley Stadium. He's a hot dog vendor. Think he's bitter? You should talk to his room mate, Pete Best!"
Hardly the joke of the year, but Carlo was chuffed that he got a mention on national US TV!
Carlo made Honorary Member of Brian Jones Fan Club
July 1999
Brian Jones died 30 years ago on the 3rd of July 1999. Carlo and his wife were invited to a special ceremony in Cheltenham, Gloucester (Brian's home town and place of burial) organised by Spirit, the Brian Jones Fan Club and Pat Andrews, the mother of Brian's son. At a reception after the service Carlo was invited to become an honorary member of the fan club, which he gratefully accepted. He signed fans autographs and posed for pictures. Back in the 1960's when Brian was poor Carlo had bought his Johnny Cash albums from him to help him out with cash.
